A Case For Larger, Authority-Style Content Sites
Why Size Really DOES Matter
Well, I just got an email from one of the famous gurus regarding the latest shenanigans over at Google's Adwords department. Actually, I don't think it's all that bad of an idea and I think I understand where they're coming from. The point of the email was in reference to the latest Google Slap and how some advertisers are really getting hosed by the whole thing.
You see, back in the day, it used to be easy to use pay-per-click to get traffic to just about any site. I suppose I shouldn't phrase it like that because it makes it sounds like I'm about to say that things are NOT easy now, but that's far from the case. You just have to have the right kind of site in the eyes of the all-mighty Google.
It's becoming increasingly true that gone are the days of the tiny site with a couple of pages of content and some affiliate links or Adsense ads. That sort of site won't make it very far in the search engines anymore (though there are admittedly other ways to get traffic besides organic SEO). Nonetheless, it looks like this sort of shift is also happening with Adwords. Google's trying to "clean house" and get rid of sites that cause a bad experience for their customers. To be honest, I welcome the change and you will to when you consider where they're coming from.
Imagine you're going to look up info on mesothelioma (yup, that keyword that's somewhat of an Internet Marketing urban legend, supposedly offering AdSense cost-per-click prices upwards of $20.00). Now this is a SERIOUS issue, no time for screwing around if you're searching for info on this sort of topic, right? So you bop over to Google, then click through one of the ads that comes up on your search and BAM!...junky, spammy, 5-pager site. OUCH!
Wouldn't that tick you off? I'd be a little irked. And that's just the sort of thing Google is trying to avoid. Take that scenario out over the long-term and imagine if everytime you clicked on an ad, you got that same sorta' thing. Well, no more clicks on ads my friend. That would force legitimate advertisers would leave, Google would no longer be getting that source of revenue, the lowly AdSense publisher would also lose out and the Internet searcher might miss out on a fantastic resource that they might otherwise not have found because the site's too new to rank high in the free search rankings. In fact, it's a lose-lose-lose-lose situation for everyone if Google just allows things to run amok, I'm sure you'll agree.
So all of this makes an even stronger case for just taking time to go all out build a handful (literally a handful, like 3-5) MASSIVE content sites that cover a wide range of a particular topic. It would probably be tough for Google to ding such a site in terms of quality score, the site would probably be easier to maintain and it would allow the site owner to focus their effort on becoming the expert in a particular area. That would make certain product offers, memberships, PLR sites and other bits of "information overload" completely irrelevant also since they probably wouldn't apply to your "main thing".
I know, I know, you'd potentially have all your eggs in one basket, right? But if it's a big enough basket, there's likely to always be a need for that type of information...just another counterargument against all this talk of "nicheing" into these ultra-obscure topics.
So I say go BIG!
